CVE-2024-23113-poc

CVE-2024-23113 is a vulnerability discovered in the Linux Kernel, classified as an arbitrary code execution vulnerability that affects the bpf (Berkeley Packet Filter) subsystem. Specifically, this vulnerability affects objects of the bpf_prog type in bpf programs, and can allow an attacker to execute malicious code in kernel space by crafting malicious BPF programs.

Vulnerability Principle:

  1. BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) is a framework in the Linux kernel used for packet capture and network traffic analysis. It allows user programs to interact directly with the kernel by loading BPF programs, which are typically used in areas such as networking, tracing, and performance analysis.

  2. The vulnerability essentially occurs during the processing of a data structure in the BPF Type Format (BTF). An attacker can trigger pointer offset issues in the kernel code by passing malicious BTF data structures, leading to kernel memory leaks or arbitrary code execution.

  3. Through carefully crafted input, an attacker can control the program execution flow, and can even bypass certain security mechanisms in the kernel to execute arbitrary code, thereby gaining root privileges.

Vulnerability Exploitation:

  1. Attack Conditions: The attacker needs to be able to inject malicious BPF programs into the system or modify existing BPF programs. Typically, this requires the attacker to have certain privileges, such as being able to load custom BPF programs, or being able to influence the system's network stack.

  2. Exploitation Method: The attacker crafts a malicious BPF program and loads it into the system, triggering the vulnerability in the BPF subsystem to gain control over the kernel. During exploitation, the attacker can trigger pointer operation errors, memory leaks, and other issues in the kernel, ultimately executing arbitrary code.

Defense Measures:

  2. Restrict BPF Program Loading: Some Linux distributions allow users to control which programs can load BPF programs. Reducing unnecessary BPF program loading permissions may help reduce the attack surface.

  3. Enhance Kernel Security Settings: Further increase the security of the BPF subsystem by enabling kernel hardening options, such as the CONFIG_BPF_SYSCALL configuration.

  4. Use Security Modules such as SELinux/AppArmor: Strengthen system access control to limit the privileges of programs and processes that could be exploited by attackers.
