CVE-2025-65637: Logrus Denial of Service Vulnerability

This directory contains proof-of-concept code and test scripts for the Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability in github.com/sirupsen/logrus, assigned as CVE-2025-65637.

Vulnerability Summary

CVE ID: CVE-2025-65637

CWE: CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption)

CVSS: 7.5 (High)

Discoverers: Christopher Straight, Juan Pablo Mandelbaum

Description

A denial-of-service vulnerability exists in github.com/sirupsen/logrus when using Entry.Writer() to log a single-line payload larger than 64KB without newline characters.

Due to limitations in the internal bufio.Scanner, the read fails with "token too long" and the writer pipe is closed, leaving Writer() unusable and causing application unavailability (DoS).

This affects versions < 1.8.3, 1.9.0, and 1.9.2. The issue is fixed in 1.8.3, 1.9.1, and 1.9.3+, where the input is chunked and the writer continues to function even if an error is logged.

Affected Versions:

  • < v1.8.3 (including v1.8.1, v1.8.2)

  • v1.9.0

  • v1.9.2

Fixed Versions:

  • v1.8.3

  • v1.9.1

  • v1.9.3+

Files

  • poc_logrus_dos_improved.go - Standalone PoC demonstrating the vulnerability

  • poc_logrus_dos.go - Simpler PoC version

  • test_versions.ps1 - PowerShell script to test multiple versions

  • test_versions.sh - Bash script to test multiple versions

  • test_single_version.ps1 - Quick test for a single version

Quick Start

Test a Single Version

root@kitploit:~
# PowerShell
.\test_single_version.ps1 v1.8.1

Test All Versions

root@kitploit:~
# PowerShell
.\test_versions.ps1
root@kitploit:~
# Bash/Linux
chmod +x test_versions.sh
./test_versions.sh

Manual PoC

root@kitploit:~
go mod init poclogrus
go get github.com/sirupsen/[email protected]
go run poc_logrus_dos_improved.go

Test Results

Comprehensive testing confirms:

How It Works

The vulnerability occurs when logrus.Writer() receives a single line larger than 64KB without newlines. This can occur when applications pipe user-controlled data (e.g., HTTP headers like User-Agent or stdout/stderr of a sub-process) into logrus.Writer().

Vulnerable versions: The internal scanner fails, the pipe breaks, and the application loses logging or crashes (DoS).

Fixed versions: The error is logged, but the Writer continues to function properly, preventing the DoS.
