0.Summary

This is essentially a statistical vulnerability: it requires a large number of attempts to win the race condition and successfully execute arbitrary code, and the attacker needs to overcome many obstacles," Schwartz told SecurityWeek. "Even in the best case, the most famous vulnerability takes over 4 hours to run."

In the OpenSSH 9.8 release notes, developers stated that the vulnerability has only been confirmed on glibc-based 32-bit Linux systems, and noted that OpenBSD is not affected.

1.Environment Setup

Environment setup using Docker

1.1.Write Dockerfile

root@kitploit:~
FROM i386/ubuntu:20.04
ENV DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive
RUN dpkg --add-architecture i386 && apt-get update && apt-get install -y \
    build-essential \
    wget \
    curl \
    libssl-dev:i386 \
    zlib1g-dev:i386
RUN groupadd sshd && useradd -g sshd -s /bin/false sshd
RUN wget https://cdn.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/OpenSSH/portable/openssh-9.2p1.tar.gz && \
    tar -xzf openssh-9.2p1.tar.gz && \
    cd openssh-9.2p1 && \
    ./configure && make && make install
RUN mkdir /var/run/sshd
RUN echo 'root:password' | chpasswd
RUN sed -i 's/#PermitRootLogin prohibit-password/PermitRootLogin yes/' /usr/local/etc/sshd_config && \
    sed -i 's/#PasswordAuthentication yes/PasswordAuthentication yes/' /usr/local/etc/sshd_config && \

RUN echo '#!/bin/bash\n/usr/local/sbin/sshd -V' > /show_version.sh && \
    chmod +x /show_version.sh
EXPOSE 22
CMD ["/usr/local/sbin/sshd", "-D"]

1.2.Build Image

root@kitploit:~
sudo docker build --platform=linux/386 -t vulnerable-openssh:9.2p1 .

1.3.Run Docker Container

root@kitploit:~
sudo docker run --platform=linux/386 -d -p 2222:22 --name vuln-ssh-32bit vulnerable-openssh:9.2p1

1.4.Confirm SSH Service Running

root@kitploit:~
docker exec -it vuln-ssh-32bit /bin/bash
ps aux | grep sshd

2.Vulnerability Verification

2.1.C PoC

There is one available on the public internet, but it requires compilation; the code is attached in the related link. I modified it to Python, added multi-threaded concurrency to increase attack speed, and set the number of runs to 100,000, exiting after successful attack.

Go ahead and run it; you'll get a root shell sometime far in the future.
