node2shell-scanner

A command-line tool for detecting CVE-2026-111497 in Node.js HTTP applications.

How It Works

The scanner sends four one-byte controls to learn how the endpoint handles valid Brotli JSON, malformed Brotli, requests without a JSON content type, and unsupported encodings. It then streams a 23,068,764-byte Brotli probe and repeats the valid control.

A target is reported vulnerable only when the full probe reaches the valid route-response class, the malformed-response class is distinct, and the final control confirms the endpoint remained stable. This matches Assetnote's internal postmodule detection logic and does not execute a command.

The URL path is preserved and defaults to /. Redirects are not followed.

Network Impact

Each tested endpoint receives five one-byte requests and one 23,068,764-byte probe. The probe uses Expect: 100-continue, so a proxy can reject its advertised size before the body is uploaded.

Requirements

  • Python 3.9+
  • h11
  • tqdm

Installation

pip install -r requirements.txt

Docker

docker build -t node2shell-scanner .
docker run --rm node2shell-scanner -u https://example.com/api

Usage

python3 scanner.py -u https://example.com/api
python3 scanner.py -l hosts.txt -t 20 -o results.json
python3 scanner.py -u https://example.com --path /api/json
python3 scanner.py -u https://example.com -H "Authorization: Bearer token"

Options

-u, --url Single URL to check
-l, --list File containing hosts (one per line)
-t, --threads Number of concurrent threads (default: 10)
--timeout Per-request timeout in seconds (default: 60)
-o, --output Output file for results (JSON)
--all-results Save all results, not just vulnerable hosts
-k, --insecure Disable TLS certificate verification
-H, --header Custom header (can be used multiple times)
-v, --verbose Show verdict reasons and response snippets
-q, --quiet Only output vulnerable hosts
--no-color Disable colored output
--path Custom path to test (can be used multiple times)
--path-file File containing paths to test (one per line)

Output

Results are printed to the terminal. With -o, vulnerable hosts are saved to JSON with the comparison mode and redacted request/response evidence. Use --all-results to save every verdict.
